Mission

To conduct research on the most challenging problems in the atmospheric sciences for the betterment of humankind, and to provide a modern, world-class education to students in the atmospheric sciences that will guide them to be leaders and exemplary citizens, and enable them to pursue life-long intellectual discovery and service.

The Department had its beginnings in 1969 with the arrival of Professor Yoshimitsu Ogura to the University of Illinois campus. Professor Ogura was recruited from Japan by Illinois to establish a Laboratory for Atmospheric Research (LAR) within the Graduate College. Thereafter, Department of Atmospheric Sciences moved to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and established a highly regarded undergraduate degree program.  Explore the links to the right to learn more about our Department and the services we provide.
