The Department of Atmospheric Sciences is committed to a safe and productive environment for all students, staff, and faculty. Harassment, intimidation, or discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated.
Harassment, intimidation, or discrimination includes offensive comments and actions related to age, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, and political beliefs; sexual images in public spaces; deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following; harassing photography or recording; sustained disruption of talks or other events; inappropriate physical contact; and unwelcome sexual attention.
All interactions should be professional, respectful, and inclusive of people of many different backgrounds and positions within the department. Ridicule or mockery, insults or put-downs, offensive objects or pictures, and interference with work or academic performance of colleagues or fellow students do not constitute acceptable behavior. Harassment and sexist, racist, transphobic, or exclusionary jokes are also unacceptable. Those who violate the standards of professional and respectful conduct may be referred to the appropriate campus committee for disciplinary action. This code of conduct also applies to travel to and participation in conferences, field work, social events including student-led outings, and in online spaces including Facebook, Twitter, and other online venues.
If you believe you have witnessed or have been subjected to behavior that violates professional and respectful behavior, you have several resources available to you. Within the department, you can share your concerns with the Department Head, Jeff Trapp, the Director of Graduate Studies, Steve Nesbitt, or the Chair of the DEI committee, Nicole Riemer. At the campus level, you can contact the Office of Student Conflict Resolution or report an incident here. If you witness or experience behavior that constitutes an urgent and serious threat, please call 911 or the local police immediately.
The Department of Atmospheric Sciences takes any breach of professional conduct very seriously. You are encouraged to report any unprofessional conduct in the knowledge that the department leadership will do their best to maintain the confidentiality of all parties to the extent possible while taking appropriate actions. In situations for which additional action is warranted, the department will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities.
