Biography

 Hi, I am Seetharaman Seshadri

I joined the department of Atmospheric Sciences in the university of Illinois Urbana Champaign during the fall 2022. I am working under the guidance of Professor Atul Jain. My work is in the field of land system and climate change where I am dealing with Integrated model to analyze the response soil carbon and nitrogen to changes in environmental factors like Climate change, CO2 availability and land use change. I did my masters in Earth System and science and Technology from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur which is one of the topmost colleges in India and did my bachelor's in Mechatronics Engineering which deals with basics of robotics. I am very enthusiastic to work in diverse backgrounds and eager to learn new things.

Research Interests

Land System and Climate change

Land System modeling

Statistical analysis and bias correction of past climate data

Research Description

Climate warming, land-use changes, and atmospheric CO2 concentrations [CO2] change the CO2 uptake by the soils and vegetation. Nutrient limitations, such as nitrogen, limit plant growth in ecosystems. The study of carbon and nitrogen dynamics for terrestrial ecosystems helps us understand the changes in nutrient storage and nutrient cycling. This includes analyses of carbon and nitrogen contents present in the above and below-ground vegetation and its changes to environmental factors. I plan to use a land surface model, the Integrated Science Assessment model, in my Ph.D. research to the changes in carbon and nitrogen storage and their interaction with various environmental factors under various future scenarios. The Integrated Science Assessment Model (ISAM) consists of the carbon and nitrogen cycle that are coupled together. The model estimates the change in net primary productivity with increasing CO2, changes in plant photosynthesis, respiration, and the relation between carbon uptake and nitrogen deposition in plants. I plan to use a finer spatial resolution version of ISAM (0.1x0.1 deg) to study changes in carbon and nitrogen dynamics.
